This piece was created as a commission for the Woven festival in June 2019. The sounds have mostly been created from original recordings of historical and modern machinery used in the production of textiles, along with recordings of water sources in Marsden, and a scattering of synthesized sounds. Some of these sounds will no longer be recognisable however...
Some themes that are explored in the piece include the timeline of production in Kirklees - the first half features a lot of water sounds from Marsden (which partly accounts for the reputation of quality in the area) as well as sounds generated from older machines. These sounds then break down, symbolising the decline of textile production in the area in the 20th century. The piece then flows into a futuristic section, which includes some sounds recorded at the currently operating Camira mill in Meltham. This section is intended to represent modern production and technological advances that keep Kirklees at the forefront of textile manufacturing today.
This piece was created with no time to spare in just four Tech-Know workshops at Hoot, plus a bit of post-production time by the studio team. It was composed, engineered, arranged and produced by:
